The number of patients infected with the new influenza is rapidly increasing. Here are ways to better protect yourself against the disease. The new influenza is a viral infection causing the symptoms of runny nose, soar throat, cough and fever. Professor Woo Jun Hee of the Department of Infectious Diseases The new influenza is not as threatening or serious as we worry. It is transmitted largely through two channels. First, from hand to hand. The joining of hands widely spreads the new influenza virus. Therefore, the foremost measure is to wash hands correctly and thoroughly. Second, though less likely, it can be transmitted through the air. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or handkerchief when sneezing or coughing to protect yourself and others from getting infected. Hands are what transmit the new influenza in most cases. We touch our faces more frequently than we realize, and viruses on the hands are transmitted to the respiratory system easily. Hand-washing is the most effective in preventing the infection. Here are the six steps of correct hand-washing. 1. Rub the palms of the hands together 2. Interlock the fingers to rub the backs of the fingers with the palms 3. Rub the backs of the hands with the palms 4. Clasp the thumb with the opposing hand and rub in a rotational motion 5. Interlace the fingers and rub the palms together 6. Place the fingers on the opposing palm and rub in a rotational motion to clean the tips of the fingernails Make sure to cleanse the hands with soap, and dry them immediately after washing to always keep them clean. The new influenza is not fatal, and can be cured in most cases. Preventive vaccines are also being developed. Experts advise people not to be overly alarmed.
